Porn 101: Porn Categories

In case you haven’t been following this blog since its inception, not only do I run this blog but I am also the editor-in-chief of the adult industry news site, AIPdaily.com. One of the many things we do over there is reviewing pornographic movies. We don’t generally review the really hardcore companies like Evil Angel and studios like those but I like to think we are generally eclectic, when we get reviews rolling out.

Anyhow, now for the point of this article, the first in what I hope will be a series of articles, and that is educating people on porn. In this instance we will be talking about the different kinds of movies. Generally speaking, all movies can fall into one of three categories: all-sex, story driven and vignette. For the sake of keeping this as basic as possible, I will not talk about solo scenes or movies. There are obviously sub-categories within each category and I will explain some of those as well. So why don’t we cut all this babble and get to our first category, all-sex.

All-Sex:

Of the three categories this is the easiest one to talk about, as far as what you are getting. No frills, just sex. The all-sex category easily makes up the largest percentage of films that are released. While some may be big productions involving a handful of people, many are shot with just the performers and a single camera man. The All-Sex category is also where you typically see a lot of what would be considered more extreme sex such as DP (double penetration), gangbangs, bukkake, creampies, etc. Now let’s move onto some of the sub-categories.

Wall-to-Wall – This isn’t used that often but Wall-to-Wall is the most basic type of porn around. These movies usually just jump right into the action, usually starting with the couple on screen kissing or rubbing on each other. Sometimes there will be a tease with the female performer or performers before the scene but that is usually only seen in higher production value movies.

Gonzo – Gonzo is the name that most people give to All-Sex movies. While many All-Sex movies are in fact gonzo, they are not all Gonzo. Gonzo is a specific kind of movie in which the performer acknowledges the camera. This is done in multiple ways. The most common is they will talk to the camera in an interview before the scene or they will stare into the camera and break the fourth wall by talking to the person watching. The other common way this is done is when the male performer is also the camera man, this is also known as POV (point of view) but again, not all POV porn falls into the category of Gonzo.

Story Driven:

Quite simply, this is porn with a story. They can range from a single scene, like something you might see on the Brazzers or Naughty America networks, to a full length movie where the sex scenes are interwoven into the story. There are a handful of studios that shoot Story Driven porn almost exclusively, studios like Adam & Eve, Bluebird Films and Wicked Pictures.

“Reality” Porn – I wouldn’t necessarily call all of them this but for the sake of argument this is what I am going to call the scenes that come out on the network sites that I mentioned above, among others as well. “Reality” Porn is a single scene that tries to depict some ordinary event and makes in sexy. The perfect example of this would be the pizza delivery guy who gets laid when delivering a pizza to a lonely housewife. On the other end of the spectrum in this sub-category would be the scenes where they show some guy or girl, trying to pick-up strangers and have sex with them back at their place on in their van, BangBus is a good example of this. By the way, I put the word “Reality” in quotes to say that even though these are possibly real life situations, the chances of them actually happening are pretty then.

Features – These are the movies that have a story that covers the entire movie. The sex is integrated into the story, so that it actually seems like it could really happen. This is important because it allows a smooth transition from story into sex without having to reestablish what has happened. The movies in this sub-category are also generally made with couple in mind because if your partner, may they be a man or woman, has never been exposed to pornography, it is probably best for them to see something that is a bit softer than what most porn shows. The movies are generally more romantic in nature as well, which is why single women tend to like these movies as well.

Vignette:

Vignettes make up the smallest percentage of porn produced in the industry. The best way to describe them is that they are in between All-Sex and Story Driven porn. While vignettes have a little bit of acting involved in them, the majority are just a series of scenes that are linked in some way. Over at AIPdaily, I wrote a review for a movie called Hotel from Juicy Pink Box and Girlfriends Films. This is a prime example of a Vignette. In this case, the movie is a series of four scenes involving four girl/girl couples having morning sex in their hotel room. While each scene takes place in a hotel room, each scene has a different take, which is brought out during the opening moments. Wicked Pictures does a lot of Vignette movies as well, with one of their most recent ones being Sexy, which shows a series of scenes with a dance theme.

I am sure I missed some things here and there but this is a general lesson on the different types of porn that there are and more importantly, I hope I helped you differentiate between the different types. As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, I hope this will be the first in a series of articles, so check back often to see the rest.

  1. Christina, I can't tell you how great this article is. Even I'm guilty of still referring to ALL-SEX is gonzo, even after recently learning that not ALL-SEX scenes are GONZO! This is great:)
